About Jeffrey Hance
Life shaped by perspective.
I’ve been taking photographs since 1996. Growing up in Northern Michigan, disposable cameras were never far away. I photographed the people, places and moments around me, turning the images into gifts for family and friends and filling cork boards on my walls with photographs I had made.
In 2004, photography became inseparable from exploration. Choosing a study-abroad experience through Western Michigan University took me to Australia and New Zealand, kayaking Milford Sound, hiking Hinchinbrook Island, Royal National Park, Arthur’s Pass and the Kepler Track, and traveling New Zealand by camper van. Those experiences shaped the way I see through a camera: paying attention to place, detail, connection and the moments that exist without being manufactured.
For years, my professional life took a different direction. My experience spans two decades in business management and healthcare IT consulting. In 2019, I intentionally returned to photography. What began decades earlier as an instinct to notice and preserve what was around me became Hance Studios.
Today, my work is focused on fine art photography prints, commissioned photography, Documomentary sessions, pet photography, and image licensing. Across each of those areas, the approach remains consistent: notice what is already present, avoid manufacturing what does not need to be manufactured, and create photographs with a strong sense of authenticity, place, and character.
Hance Studios brings together the way I have always approached photography, from disposable cameras in Northern Michigan to years of travel and the work I create today. I am drawn to landscapes, architecture, people, animals, relationships, and details that might otherwise pass unnoticed.
The goal is not simply to make something visually appealing. It is to create photographs that feel true to what was in front of the camera and meaningful enough to remain with someone long after the moment itself has passed.
